कथाThe tradition
Devi Gayatri, and the mantra that bears her name
The Gayatri mantra comes from the Rigveda, from its third book, the hymns of the rishi Vishvamitra. It is addressed to Savitr, the Sun as the one who wakes the world at dawn, and it is composed in the gayatri metre, from which it takes its name. At the upanayana, the sacred-thread ceremony, it is the mantra a child receives.
ॐ भूर्भुवः स्वः तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात् ॥
Om Bhur Bhuvah Svah, Tat Savitur Varenyam, Bhargo Devasya Dhimahi, Dhiyo Yo Nah Prachodayat
Its meaning, in short: we meditate on the radiance of Savitr, the divine Sun; may he stir our thought. In tradition the verse has a form of its own, Devi Gayatri, pictured with five faces, seated on a lotus, with the swan as her vahana. In the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna says that among metres he is the Gayatri.
The mantra is chanted at the sandhyas, the meeting points of the day, and above all at sunrise. Her yantra keeps that hour on a study desk: a single point at the centre, the seat of the Devi, and the lines that open around it, drawn from the yantra's traditional form.
स्थानWhere it is kept
When and where families keep the Gayatri yantra
On the study desk, facing east, towards the sunrise the mantra greets. Many families set it there at the start of a school year or as the exam months begin, and the student comes back to it each morning for one breath before opening the books.
- On the study desk, facing east.
- In a wallet, on exam and interview days.
- In the puja ghar, if the family chants the Gayatri mantra there at sunrise.
It suits any desk where someone reads, writes or studies. Keep it off the floor.
