कथाThe tradition

Mahalaxmi, who rose from the ocean of milk

The Vishnu Purana tells how Shri, as Lakshmi is also called, once left the three worlds. The sage Durvasa had given Indra a garland. Indra laid it on the head of his elephant, and the elephant threw it to the ground. After that slight the brightness went out of the worlds, and the devas turned to Vishnu. At his word, the devas and asuras churned the ocean of milk together. From its depths Lakshmi rose, seated on a lotus, a lotus in her hand, and the elephants of the four quarters bathed her with water from golden vessels. She chose Vishnu, and stayed at his side.

Families still welcome her as the story does: as the one who comes where she is honoured. Before Diwali the house is cleaned, rangoli is drawn at the door with her small footprints stepping in, and on the new-moon night of the Lakshmi Pujan a lamp is lit in every room. The Shri Suktam, her hymn among those added to the Rigveda, calls her golden-hued and seated in the lotus.

A yantra, in tradition, is the deity's form drawn in geometry. At its centre is a single point, the seat of the Devi. Around it the lines and petals open outward to the square of the bhupura, with a gate on each side.

स्थानWhere it is kept

When and where families keep the Mahalaxmi yantra

Many families begin a Mahalaxmi yantra in the Diwali season: on Dhanteras, the year's traditional day for a new purchase, or at the Lakshmi Pujan on Diwali night. Through the year they come back to it on Fridays, which tradition keeps for Lakshmi.

  • In your wallet or purse, so that it goes with you through the day.
  • In the puja ghar, beside her murti or picture, where you light the evening diya.
  • In the locker or the cash box, where the household's savings are kept.

At home, the northeast (Ishan) corner is the traditional place for the deities. Keep the card off the floor and out of the bathroom.

नामYour card

What your Mahalaxmi card carries

  • The Mahalaxmi yantra, with Goddess Mahalaxmi, drawn from its traditional form.
  • The name, in the script you write it in. Devanagari or English, printed exactly as you type it, never transliterated.
  • Depending on the design, a date of birth, a gotra, a short message or a photo.
  • The card's own QR. It opens the card's page, showing the card as it was issued and its status today.
  • A serial number on the back, beginning with BC-.

You add the details after payment, in the Bhagya Card app or on the web, with a live preview. Nothing is printed until you press "Make my card"; after that, the details are final.

विधिHow to begin

Begin it at home, in about thirty minutes

You do not need a pandit. Choose a morning when you can give it thirty unhurried minutes, ideally at sunrise.

  1. Unwrap it with intention, in your puja ghar or at a desk facing east.
  2. Cleanse it with a soft cloth dipped in water and a pinch of haldi.
  3. Light a diya and offer a flower: a small ghee lamp, a marigold or a rose, a few grains of rice.
  4. Chant the bija mantra 108 times, one mala, with the card in your right hand.
  5. Set your sankalpa, your intention in one sentence, holding the card to your forehead.
  6. Place it where it lives: your wallet, the puja ghar, the locker.
  7. Return to it each morning for one breath. There is nothing to renew; the practice is your attention.

The bija mantra is printed on the activation card in your envelope.
