कथाThe tradition

The eight Lakshmis, in one yantra

The tradition of the Ashtalakshmi, much loved in South India, sees Lakshmi as more than money. She is worshipped in eight forms, and each one stands for a part of the plenty a household hopes for:

  • Adi Lakshmi, the first and original form.
  • Dhana Lakshmi, of wealth, holding a pot of gold.
  • Dhanya Lakshmi, of grain and the harvest, holding sheaves of paddy.
  • Gaja Lakshmi, bathed by elephants, as she was when she rose from the ocean of milk.
  • Santana Lakshmi, of children and the family line, with a child on her lap.
  • Vira Lakshmi, of courage.
  • Vijaya Lakshmi, of victory.
  • Vidya Lakshmi, of learning.

In many homes the Ashtalakshmi Stotram, a hymn of eight verses, one for each form, is sung on Fridays, and the eight are worshipped together at Diwali.

The Ashtalakshmi yantra gathers all eight into one drawing around a single point, so that a family keeps them together. In tradition it is kept for the whole picture of a home's plenty: the harvest and the household, learning, and the courage of an ordinary day.

स्थानWhere it is kept

When and where families keep the Ashtalakshmi yantra

As a card for the whole household, it is most often kept in the puja ghar, where the family gathers for the evening diya. Many families begin it on a Friday, which tradition keeps for Lakshmi, or at the Lakshmi Pujan on Diwali night.

  • In the puja ghar, in the northeast (Ishan) corner if your home allows.
  • In a wallet or purse, for the one who keeps the household's accounts.
  • In the locker, with the family's savings.

Keep it off the floor, and out of the bathroom.

नामYour card

What your Ashtalakshmi card carries

  • The Ashtalakshmi yantra, with the eight Lakshmis, drawn from its traditional form.
  • The name, in the script you write it in. Devanagari or English, printed exactly as you type it, never transliterated.
  • Depending on the design, a date of birth, a gotra, a short message or a photo.
  • The card's own QR. It opens the card's page, showing the card as it was issued and its status today.
  • A serial number on the back, beginning with BC-.

You add the details after payment, in the Bhagya Card app or on the web, with a live preview. Nothing is printed until you press "Make my card"; after that, the details are final.

विधिHow to begin

Begin it at home, in about thirty minutes

You do not need a pandit. Choose a morning when you can give it thirty unhurried minutes, ideally at sunrise.

  1. Unwrap it with intention, in your puja ghar or at a desk facing east.
  2. Cleanse it with a soft cloth dipped in water and a pinch of haldi.
  3. Light a diya and offer a flower: a small ghee lamp, a marigold or a rose, a few grains of rice.
  4. Chant the bija mantra 108 times, one mala, with the card in your right hand.
  5. Set your sankalpa, your intention in one sentence, holding the card to your forehead.
  6. Place it where it lives: the puja ghar, your wallet, the locker.
  7. Return to it each morning for one breath. There is nothing to renew; the practice is your attention.

The bija mantra is printed on the activation card in your envelope.

उपहारA gift

Giving it to a family

A card for a whole household makes a Diwali gift for your parents' home, or for a family setting up its own. Pay now and add the name after payment, as they write it. Add their mobile number too, and the card reaches their wallet in the Bhagya Card app, on their phone or on the web. If they have not installed the app yet, the card is waiting when they sign in with that number. If you forget to add the name, we send you a reminder.

It is dispatched within 1–2 business days. Delivery then takes 3–5 business days to a metro address in India, 4–7 to a remote one, and 7–14 business days abroad.
