Yantras for Diwali 2026: which one, and when

On Diwali night, with the diyas lit and a fresh rangoli at the door, families welcome Lakshmi home. So the yantra for Diwali is a Lakshmi yantra: begin the Mahalaxmi Yantra Card at the Lakshmi Puja, which in 2026 is Sunday 8 November, after sunset. Many families keep the Kuber card beside it, where the savings are kept, and shops keep the Vyapaar Vruddhi card at the counter. Below: the five days, the evening's window, how to begin the card, and the last day to order so it reaches you in time.

परंपराThe tradition

What are the five days of Diwali in 2026?

For days before, the house is cleaned room by room. On the first evening something new is bought for the home. On the night of the new moon the diyas go up along the doorstep, the traders open their new books, and the family sits down together for the Lakshmi Puja.

Diwali is a five-day festival around the new moon (Amavasya) of Kartik, the month the amanta calendar calls Ashwin. Its centre is the Lakshmi Puja on the new-moon evening. In the usual order, Dhanteras opens it, Naraka Chaturdashi follows, then the Lakshmi Puja, then Govardhan Puja and Bali Pratipada, and Bhai Dooj closes it. In some years two of them fall on the same day, so the table gives each date as our own panchang works it out.

In Gujarat, Kali Chaudas is kept on the night of Chaturdashi, the fourteenth day of the dark fortnight.

कार्डWhich card

Which yantra should you choose for Diwali?

Choose by what you hold in your heart for the coming year. These are the cards that belong to the festival; the buying guide pairs every other intention with its card.

  • Mahalaxmi Yantra Card · Goddess Mahalaxmi. In tradition, Mahalaxmi is welcomed home on Diwali night and kept for prosperity all year. Her yantra, for your wallet or your puja ghar. It is the traditional card for the Lakshmi Puja: begin it in the evening's window on 8 November, then keep it at the cash counter, in your wallet or in the northeast corner.
  • Kuber Yantra Card · Lord Kuber. Lord Kuber keeps the treasury of the devas. Families keep his yantra where their own is kept: the cash box, the locker, the wallet. In many homes he is worshipped with Lakshmi on Dhanteras. Keep his card in the locker or on the north wall.
  • Ashtalakshmi Yantra Card · the eight Lakshmis. Eight forms of Lakshmi in one yantra, from Dhanya Lakshmi of the harvest to Vidya Lakshmi of learning. Kept for every kind of plenty a home hopes for. Choose it in place of the Mahalaxmi card, and begin it on the same night.
  • Vyapaar Vruddhi Yantra Card · Vyapaar Devata. The collection's card for trade. Shop-owners keep it at the cash counter or the reception, often from the first morning of a new opening. At Diwali, place it behind the cash counter on Dhanteras, or on Labh Panchami, the fifth day of the bright fortnight of Kartik, when many Gujarati traders reopen for the new year.

The Shri Yantra and the Lakshmi-Ganesha yantra are also widely worshipped at Diwali. We do not make either, so neither is offered here; the glossary explains the Shri Yantra.

A sacred keepsake for your daily practice. Its significance comes from long-held tradition and faith, and, like every devotional object, it is offered with love rather than with a promise of specific results. Learn more

मुहूर्तThe evening

When is the Lakshmi Puja muhurat in 2026?

Lakshmi Puja is done after sunset, in Pradosh kaal, on the evening the new moon (Amavasya) holds at dusk. In 2026 that is Sunday 8 November: Amavasya runs from 11:28 on 8 November to 12:31 on 9 November (Indian time, from our own panchang). In Mumbai, Pradosh kaal that evening runs from 18:02 to 20:34; many families choose the part of it when Vrishabha, a fixed sign, is rising.

The window moves with your city's sunset, not with your birth chart; the calendar shows that evening's times for your city. A muhurat is the window tradition sets for a rite, and inside it the card is begun with the same seven steps as on any other day.

विधिHow to begin

How to begin the Mahalaxmi card on Diwali night

The seven steps are usually done at sunrise. On Diwali they are done inside the evening's window, as part of the Lakshmi Puja. They take about thirty minutes, and you do not need a pandit.

  1. Unwrap it in your puja ghar. Open the envelope in the freshly cleaned puja ghar, and pause for a breath first.
  2. Cleanse it with water and haldi. Wipe the card with a soft cloth dipped in water and a pinch of turmeric.
  3. Light a diya, offer a flower. A small ghee lamp, one marigold or rose, and a few grains of rice.
  4. Chant the bija mantra 108 times. It is printed on the activation card. Hold the card in your right hand and chant one mala.
  5. Set your sankalpa, your intention in one sentence. Hold the card to your forehead and say it plainly: "steady cash-flow" says more than a large word.
  6. Place it where it lives. The wallet, the cash box, the puja ghar, or the northeast (Ishan) corner of your home or shop.
  7. Return to it each morning. Touch it or look at it for one breath. There is nothing to renew; the practice is your attention.

How to begin your yantra

Three Diwali practices anyone can do

Clean the home

Before Dhanteras, deep-clean every room, and wash your puja ghar with water and a pinch of haldi. Let one thing go from each room. In tradition, Lakshmi enters a home that is clean and lit.

Light a row of diyas

On the Lakshmi Puja night, light a row of diyas at the entrance, in the puja ghar and at the cash counter. Many families light an odd number, often eleven, with ghee or sesame oil and cotton wicks.

Open the new books

Traders open the new ledger on the Lakshmi Puja night (Chopda Pujan). If you keep no paper books, write your sankalpa for the year's money in a small notebook and place it before the yantra for the night.

समयWhen to order

Why Dhanteras suits the purchase, and how to begin the card that evening, is in Dhanteras: which yantra to buy, and when.

प्रश्नQuestions

Questions about Diwali yantras

Which yantra is traditional for Diwali?
