Dhanteras 2027: which yantra to buy, and when

At dusk on Dhanteras a lamp is lit at the door, and something new comes into the house. Dhanteras is the first day of Diwali, and it falls on Wednesday 27 October 2027. It is the traditional day to buy something new for the home and to worship Lakshmi and Kuber as the light goes. The Dhanteras yantra, if you buy one, is theirs: in tradition the Mahalaxmi Yantra Card is kept for prosperity and the Kuber Yantra Card for savings, and either is begun that same evening. Below: the date, the evening's window, a short way to begin the card, and the last day to order.

परंपराThe tradition

What is Dhanteras, and when is it in 2027?

Dhanteras (dhan, wealth; teras, thirteenth) is kept on the thirteenth lunar day (tithi) of the dark fortnight of Kartik, the month the amanta calendar calls Ashwin, usually two days before the Lakshmi Puja. Its name in the panchang is Dhantrayodashi. In 2027 it is Wednesday 27 October: the thirteenth tithi runs from 01:03 on 27 October to 22:50 on 27 October (Indian time, from our own panchang).

Through the day, families buy something new for the home: gold or silver, a coin, or brass and steel utensils, often placed before the deities for the evening puja. At dusk many homes worship Lakshmi and Kuber together and light a lamp for Yama at the door. In tradition the day is also Dhanvantari Trayodashi, kept for Dhanvantari, the physician of the devas.

Why buy a yantra on Dhanteras?

Because the evening's puja is for Lakshmi and Kuber, and in tradition a yantra is the deity's form in geometry, one you keep all year, in the puja ghar or in your wallet. Yantras have long been drawn on paper and on birch bark (bhojpatra), as well as engraved in metal. If your family buys metal on Dhanteras, keep that custom too; a card does not take its place. The card is the object you return to each day, bought with a sankalpa, your intention in one sentence.

कार्डWhich card

  • Mahalaxmi Yantra Card · Goddess Mahalaxmi. In tradition, Mahalaxmi is welcomed home on Diwali night and kept for prosperity all year. Her yantra, for your wallet or your puja ghar. It is the Lakshmi yantra for the evening puja: keep it at the cash counter, in your wallet or in the northeast corner.
  • Kuber Yantra Card · Lord Kuber. Lord Kuber keeps the treasury of the devas. Families keep his yantra where their own is kept: the cash box, the locker, the wallet. He is worshipped with Lakshmi on Dhanteras evening. Keep his card in the locker or on the north wall.
  • Ashtalakshmi Yantra Card · the eight Lakshmis. Eight forms of Lakshmi in one yantra, from Dhanya Lakshmi of the harvest to Vidya Lakshmi of learning. Kept for every kind of plenty a home hopes for. Choose it in place of the Mahalaxmi card.
  • Vyapaar Vruddhi Yantra Card · Vyapaar Devata. The collection's card for trade. Shop-owners keep it at the cash counter or the reception, often from the first morning of a new opening. For a shop or a business, place it behind the cash counter on Dhanteras.

विधिHow to begin

How do you begin (activate) a yantra on Dhanteras?

In the evening, in Pradosh kaal after sunset. In Mumbai it runs from 18:07 to 20:37 that evening. The window moves with your city's sunset; the calendar shows it for your city. This is a short form of the seven steps. It takes about thirty minutes, and you do not need a pandit.

  1. Have the card in hand by Dhanteras evening (the order dates are below).
  2. Place it in your freshly cleaned puja ghar, facing east.
  3. Light a ghee diya and offer five grains of rice.
  4. Chant the card's bija mantra 108 times. It is printed on the activation card in the envelope.
  5. Say a one-sentence sankalpa for the year's money matters.
  6. Leave the card in your puja ghar overnight. From Diwali on, keep it where it lives: the wallet, the cash counter or the locker.

प्रश्नQuestions

Questions about Dhanteras yantras

What is traditionally bought on Dhanteras?

Something new for the home: gold or silver, a coin, or brass and steel utensils, often placed before the deities for the evening puja. A yantra card can sit beside that purchase; it does not replace it.

Which yantra suits Dhanteras?

The evening's puja is for Lakshmi and Kuber, so families choose the Mahalaxmi card, kept in tradition for prosperity, or the Kuber card, kept for savings. For a shop, the Vyapaar Vruddhi card goes behind the cash counter.

When do I begin the card on Dhanteras?

In the evening, in Pradosh kaal after sunset. The window follows your city's sunset. Leave the card in your puja ghar overnight, and move it to its place from Diwali.

Do I need a pandit?

No. The steps are meant to be done by you, at home, and the card's bija mantra is printed on the activation card in the envelope.

What if my card arrives after Dhanteras?

Begin it on the Lakshmi Puja night, or at sunrise on any day you choose. The seven steps are the same on every day.

Can I cancel or return a card?

No. Paid orders can't be cancelled, because every card is made for you. If yours arrives damaged or wrongly printed, write to us within 7 days of delivery and we will replace it at our cost.
