What Hanuman Jayanti is

Hanuman is the son of Anjani and of Vayu, the wind. In the Ramayana he crosses the sea to find Sita, carries the mountain of herbs to Lakshman, and serves Rama with a devotion the tradition holds up as its model.

He is worshipped for strength, courage and steady devotion, and his name is taken before a hard journey or a difficult day. In Maharashtra he is Maruti, and nearly every village has his temple at its edge.

Our calendar also marks the day of fasting before it, Hanuman Janmotsav Upavas, kept by many who fast from the evening before until the birth is marked.

How families keep it at home

Families rise early, and many go to a Maruti temple at dawn, where the birth is celebrated with a cradle, bhajans and aarti as the sun rises.

At home the Hanuman chalisa is read, some families reading it a hundred and eight times through the day, and sindoor mixed with oil is offered to his image.

Offerings are simple: jaggery and roasted gram, bananas, and in some homes boondi ladoo. Many keep a fast until the birth is marked.

In Maharashtra the wrestlers of the village talim, whose own shrine is Maruti's, keep the day with a puja there and a meal shared by all who train.

How it differs by region

Maharashtra and most of the north keep it on the full moon of Chaitra.

In Karnataka it is kept in the month of Margashirsha, as Hanuman Vratam, and in Tamil Nadu and Kerala in the month of Margazhi, near its new moon.

Some almanacs keep it instead on the chaturdashi of the dark half before Diwali, and in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana the observance runs for some weeks from the full moon of Chaitra.

How its date is set

In the calendar this page follows, Hanuman Jayanti is the purnima of Chaitra, kept on the day the purnima holds at sunrise.
