About this text

This is the aarti that usually follows the Hanuman Chalisa in North India, on Tuesdays, on Saturdays and on Hanuman Jayanti. It tells the Ramayana through Hanuman's deeds: the leap to Lanka with Rama's message, the burning of the city, the herb brought for Lakshmana, and the rescue from Ahiravana in the underworld.

The refrain returns after each stanza. Maharashtra commonly sings another aarti to Hanuman, Satrane Uddane, by Samarth Ramdas.

The text

Refrain, sung again after each stanza

Aartee keejai Hanumaan lalaa kee
Dusht dalan Raghunaath kalaa kee

Offer the aarti to Hanuman, the beloved child, who crushes the wicked, a part of Rama's own power.

Stanza 1

Jaake bal se girivar kaampe
Rog dosh jaake nikat na jhaanke
Anjani putra mahaabaladaayee
Santan ke prabhu sadaa sahaaee

By his strength the mountains shake, and no sickness or fault comes near him. Anjani's son gives great strength, and is ever the helper of saints.

Stanza 2

De beeraa Raghunaath pathaae
Lankaa jaari Siyaa sudhi laae
Lankaa so kot samudra see khaaee
Jaat pavanasut baar na laaee

Raghunath sent him with the betel leaf of the task. He burned Lanka and brought news of Sita. Lanka was a fortress with a moat like the sea, yet the son of the wind crossed it without delay.

Stanza 3

Lankaa jaari asur sanhaare
Siyaaraamajee ke kaaj sanvaare
Lakshman moorchhit pare sakaare
Aani sanjeevan praan ubaare

He burned Lanka and destroyed the asuras, and completed the work of Sita and Rama. When Lakshmana lay fallen in the morning, he brought the sanjivani and saved his life.

Stanza 4

Paithi paataal tori jam kaare
Ahiraavan kee bhujaa ukhaare
Baaen bhujaa asuradal maare
Daahine bhujaa santajan taare

He entered the underworld, broke Yama's bonds and tore off Ahiravana's arm. With his left arm he struck the asura host; with his right he carried the saints across.

Stanza 5

Sur nar muni aartee utaaren
Jay jay jay Hanumaan uchaaren
Kanchan thaar kapoor lau chhaaee
Aartee karat Anjanaa maaee

Devas, people and sages wave the aarti and cry victory, victory, victory to Hanuman. The flame of camphor spreads on a golden plate, and Mother Anjana offers the aarti.

Stanza 6

Lank vidhvans kie raghuraaee
Tulaseedaas svaamee keerti gaaee
Jo hanumaanajee kee aartee gaave
Basi baikunth param pad paave

Raghurai destroyed Lanka, and Tulsidas sang the Master's glory. Whoever sings Hanuman's aarti, the verse says, dwells in Vaikuntha and reaches the highest state.
