About this text
The Hanuman Chalisa is sung across India, in homes and temples, and many people know it by heart. Chalisa means a poem of forty. Tradition attributes it to Tulsidas, the 16th-century poet of the Ramcharitmanas; the second-to-last chaupai carries his name, though the early printed collections of his works leave it out.
It is commonly recited on Tuesdays and Saturdays and on Hanuman Jayanti, and many recite it daily. The chaupais tell Hanuman's deeds in the Ramayana, then speak of what his name means to those who call on him. The aarti that usually follows it is on its own page.

Where readings differ
Chaupai 6 is commonly read "sankar suvan", son of Shankara, and chaupai 32 "sadaa raho". Some recent editions read "shankar svayam", Shankara himself, and "saadar ho", on the view that Hanuman is Shiva's own form. This page keeps the wording devotees commonly sing.
