About this text

North Indian families and Shani temples recite this chalisa on Saturdays and on Shani Jayanti. It belongs to the devotional literature of the planets: it retells the stories in which tradition sees Shani's hand, from Rama's exile to Harishchandra and Nala, and lists his mounts and the four metals of his feet as a part of jyotish lore.

These are the text's own stories and statements, kept as it has them. In tradition, the recitation is an act of remembrance and humility before Shani.

Where readings differ

Copies differ in a few spellings. The list of mounts in chaupais 27 and 28 names no horse, though chaupai 29 speaks of one. This page keeps the wording of the common prints.
