About this text

The Aditya Hridayam stands in the Yuddha Kanda of the Valmiki Ramayana. Rama is tired from the fight and stands thinking, with Ravana before him, when the sage Agastya comes among the devas and teaches him this hymn to the Sun. The chapter's number differs between editions.

Many recite it at sunrise, facing the east, and on Sundays. Verses 7 to 24 are its praise of Surya as every deva and every force of nature; verses 25 to 27 give Agastya's own word on the hymn; the last verses tell how Rama recites it three times and turns to battle.
