About this text

Sunday is Surya's day in tradition, and this aarti is sung then at sunrise, as well as on Ratha Saptami and at Makar Sankranti. It follows the Sun through the day: Aruna as charioteer, the seven horses, the rise over Udayachal, cattle coming home at dusk.

One stanza names the Aditya Hridayam, the Sanskrit hymn to the Sun from the Ramayana. The refrain returns after each stanza.

The text

Refrain, sung again after each stanza

Om jay soorya bhagavaan jay ho dinakar bhagavaan
Jagat ke netrasvaroop tum ho trigun svaroop
Dharte sab hee tav dhyaan om jay soorya bhagavaan

Om, victory to Lord Surya, victory to you who make the day. You are the eye of the world and the form of the three gunas, and all hold you in thought.

Stanza 1

Godhan tab ghar aate
Godhooli belaa men har ghar har aangan men
Ho tav mahimaa gaan

At dusk, lord of the worlds, you go to the western mountain, and cattle come home. In the hour of cattle dust, in every house and courtyard your glory is sung.

Stanza 4

Dev danuj nar naaree rishi munivar bhajte

Stotra ye mangalakaaree isakee hai rachnaa nyaaree

Shubhakaaree anshumaan

The directions worship you, and the ten guardians of the directions; you protect the worlds. The seasons are your maids. You are eternal and undying, the bringer of good, the rayed one.

Where readings differ

The copies compared read "trigun svaroop", the form of the three gunas, in the refrain. An earlier version of this page read "trigun pradhaan" there, which no copy supported, and it has been corrected.
