About this text

The verse stands in the Rigveda, in the third book, whose hymns are attributed to the seer Vishvamitra. It is addressed to Savitr, the Sun as the one who stirs all things. The metre is itself called gayatri, three lines of eight syllables; the Om and the three vyahritis before it, bhuh, bhuvah and svah, the three worlds, are added from the Taittiriya Aranyaka.

It is recited across India, at sunrise and sunset in the sandhya, and is taught at the upanayana.
