About this text
Baan means an arrow: the prayer is pictured as one aimed at Hanuman to call him at once. Tradition credits it to Tulsidas, though it is not among the works scholars accept as his with certainty.
North Indian devotees recite it on Tuesdays and Saturdays. It is fierce in tone. It calls Hanuman by oath and with bija syllables, and asks him to strike at bhutas, pretas and foes. These are the text's own words, kept as it has them. Many families read it after the Hanuman Chalisa.
