About this text

Tradition tells that the boy Shankara, begging for alms, came to the house of a poor woman who had only one dried amla to give. Moved by her giving, he sang this hymn to Lakshmi, and a shower of golden amlas fell. Kanakadhara means a stream of gold.

The hymn is often recited in South and West India, on Fridays and in Lakshmi worship. These are the story and statements of tradition. Most of its verses turn on the image of Lakshmi's glance resting on Vishnu.

The text

Dhyana 1

Vande vandaaru mandaaramindiraanandakandalam
Amandaanandasandoha bandhuram sindhuraananam

I bow to the elephant-faced one, sprout of the bliss of Indira and the mandara flower to all who bow, a friend close to the mass of great joy.

Verse 1

Angam hareh pulakabhooshanamaashrayantee
Bhringaanganeva mukulaabharanam tamaalam
Angeekritaakhilavibhootirapaangaleelaa
Maangalyadaastu mama mangaladevataayaah

As a bee clings to the budding tamala, the glance of the goddess of blessings rests on Hari's body, thrilled to bristling. May that playful side-glance, holding all splendour, bring me good.

Verse 2

Mugdhaa muhurvidadhatee vadane muraareh
Prematrapaapranihitaani gataagataani
Maalaa drishormadhukareeva mahotpale yaa
Saa me shriyam dishatu saagarasambhavaayaah

Like a bee to a great lotus, the charmed glances of love and modesty go and come on Murari's face. May that garland of glances of the ocean-born one give me wealth.

Verse 3

Aameelitaakshamadhigamya mudaa mukundam
Aanandakandamanimeshamanangatantram
Aakekarasthitakaneenikapakshmanetram
Bhootyai bhavenmama bhujangashayaanganaayaah

She gazes unblinking at Mukunda, eyes half closed in joy, root of bliss and heart of love. May the half-turned eye of the serpent-sleeper's beloved be for my good.

Verse 4

Baahvantare madhujitah shritakaustubhe yaa
Haaraavaleeva harineelamayee vibhaati
Kaamapradaa bhagavatopi kataakshamaalaa
Kalyaanamaavahatu me kamalaalayaayaah

On the chest of Madhu's slayer, where the Kaustubha rests, her glance shines like a necklace of sapphires. It grants wishes even to the lord: may the lotus-dweller's garland of glances bring me good fortune.

Verse 5

Kaalaambudaalilalitorasi kaitabhaareh
Dhaaraadhare sphurati yaa tatidanganeva
Maatussamastajagataam mahaneeyamoortih
Bhadraani me dishatu bhaargavanandanaayaah

Like lightning on a rain-cloud, she shines on the cloud-dark chest of Kaitabha's foe: the mother of all the worlds, honoured form. May Bhargava's daughter give me what is good.

Verse 6

Praaptam padam prathamatah khalu yatprabhaavaat
Maangalyabhaaji madhumaathini manmathena
Mayyaapatettadiha mantharameekshanaardham
Mandaalasam cha makaraalayakanyakaayaah

By the power of that half-glance, Manmatha first gained his place in Madhu's slayer, the auspicious one. May that slow, languid half-glance of the ocean's daughter fall on me here.

Verse 7

Vishvaamarendrapadavibhramadaanadaksham
Aanandaheturadhikam muravidvishopi
Eeshannisheedatu mayi kshanameekshanaardham
Indeevarodarasahodaramindiraayaah

Able to give the rank of every lord of the devas, a joy greater even to Mura's foe: may that half-glance of Indira, like the heart of a blue lily, rest on me for a moment.

Verse 8

Ishtaa vishishtamatayopi yayaa dayaardra
Drishtyaa trivishtapapadam sulabham labhante
Drishtih prahrishtakamalodaradeeptirishtaam
Pushtim krisheeshta mama pushkaravishtaraayaah

By her kind eye even the worthy reach heaven with ease. May the shining glance of her who sits on the lotus, bright as the heart of a glad lotus, give me the growth I seek.

Verse 9

Dadyaaddayaanupavano dravinaambudhaaraa
Masminnakinchana vihangashishau vishanne
Dushkarmagharmamapaneeya chiraaya dooram
Naaraayanapranayineenayanaambuvaahah

May Narayana's beloved's eye, a rain-cloud moved by the wind of mercy, send a stream of wealth on me, this poor fledgling in distress, long driving away the heat of bad deeds.
