About this text

The hymn says of itself that Shiva showed it to the sage Budha Kaushika in a dream, and that he wrote it down on waking. Marathi homes know it especially well: many children learn it by heart and recite it at dusk before the lamp. An Ananda Ramayana version also exists.

It asks each of Rama's names to guard a part of the body, then praises the two brothers, then gathers Rama's many names, and ends in the well-known line that one name of Rama equals a thousand names. These are the text's own statements.
