About this text
Families sing this aarti at the Lakshmi puja on Diwali evening, on Dhanteras and Sharad Purnima, and on Fridays. It follows the Puranic picture of the goddess: born from the ocean of milk with the fourteen jewels, and honoured under the names Uma, Rama, Brahmani and Durga.
Its tune is close to that of Om Jai Jagdish Hare, so it is easy to learn. The refrain returns after each stanza.

ॐ जय लक्ष्मी माता, मैया जय लक्ष्मी माता।

You dwell in the underworld, and you alone give what is good. You bring to light the working of karma, and you guard us on the sea of worldly life.

खान-पान का वैभव, सब तुमसे आता॥

Without you no sacrifice takes place and no one finds clothing. The splendour of food and drink all comes from you.
