Akshaya Tritiya 2027: which yantra, and when

On Akshaya Tritiya, families buy a little gold, give something away, and begin what they have been waiting to begin. Akshaya Tritiya is the day of beginnings, and it falls on Sunday 9 May 2027. In tradition it needs no separate muhurat for new work, so families choose it to start a practice, a venture or a home. The Akshaya Tritiya yantra follows the beginning: the Brahma Yantra Card for something new, or the Mahalaxmi Yantra Card, kept in tradition for prosperity, begun in the morning of the day. Below: the date and its morning window, which card for the desk, the shop and the new home's puja ghar, and when to order.

परंपराThe tradition

What is Akshaya Tritiya, and when is it in 2027?

Akshaya means imperishable; tritiya is the third lunar day (tithi). Akshaya Tritiya is kept on the third day of the bright half of Vaishakha, in late April or early May. In 2027 it is Sunday 9 May: the third tithi runs from 11:43 on 8 May to 09:03 on 9 May (Indian time, from our own panchang), and the festival is kept on the morning it holds. In Mumbai the morning window (pratah kaal) runs from 06:06 to 08:41.

In tradition, good actions begun on this day do not diminish, and the merit of what is given on it does not wane. With Yugadi and Vijayadashami, it is one of the days on which tradition needs no separate muhurat to begin new work. Buying gold is its best-known custom.

Why begin a yantra on Akshaya Tritiya?

Because the day is kept for beginnings, and a yantra is a practice you begin: the seven steps once, then a moment of attention each day. Starting on a day your family already marks makes the start easy to keep, and many begin a 40-day mantra practice from it. Like every devotional object, the card is offered with love, not as a promise of a specific result.

कार्डWhich card

  • Brahma Yantra Card · Brahma Dev. Brahma Dev, the creator, is remembered at every beginning. His yantra is kept for a new course of study, new work, or a new chapter at home. For a new venture, a new home or a new course of study, keep it where the new work happens: the desk, the shop or the new home's puja ghar.
  • Mahalaxmi Yantra Card · Goddess Mahalaxmi. In tradition, Mahalaxmi is welcomed home on Diwali night and kept for prosperity all year. Her yantra, for your wallet or your puja ghar. For the year ahead, keep it at the cash counter, in your wallet or in the northeast corner.
  • Vyapaar Vruddhi Yantra Card · Vyapaar Devata. The collection's card for trade. Shop-owners keep it at the cash counter or the reception, often from the first morning of a new opening. For traders opening a shop or a new line of business, place it behind the cash counter.
  • Ashtalakshmi Yantra Card · the eight Lakshmis. Eight forms of Lakshmi in one yantra, from Dhanya Lakshmi of the harvest to Vidya Lakshmi of learning. Kept for every kind of plenty a home hopes for. Choose it in place of the Mahalaxmi card.

For every other intention, see how to choose a yantra; the card itself is begun with the seven steps, in the morning.

A sacred keepsake for your daily practice. Its significance comes from long-held tradition and faith, and, like every devotional object, it is offered with love rather than with a promise of specific results. Learn more

विधिHow to begin

How to begin the card on Akshaya Tritiya morning

The seven steps are done at sunrise, which suits the day: in tradition the festival is kept on the morning the third tithi holds. They take about thirty minutes, and you do not need a pandit.

  1. Unwrap it with intention. Open the envelope in your puja ghar, or at a desk facing east, after a breath.
  2. Cleanse it with water and haldi. Wipe the card with a soft cloth dipped in water and a pinch of turmeric.
  3. Light a diya, offer a flower. A small ghee lamp, one marigold or rose, and a few grains of rice.
  4. Chant the bija mantra 108 times. It is printed on the activation card. Hold the card in your right hand and chant one mala.
  5. Set your sankalpa, your intention in one sentence, for the work you begin today. Hold the card to your forehead and say it plainly.
  6. Place it where it lives. The desk, the shop's counter, the new puja ghar, or the northeast (Ishan) corner.
  7. Return to it each morning. Touch it or look at it for one breath. There is nothing to renew; the practice is your attention.

How to begin your yantra

Three traditional Akshaya Tritiya practices

Begin a sadhana

The day is kept for beginnings. Start a 40-day or 90-day mantra japa. The yantra is the focus; the daily count is the practice. The free Bhagya Card app keeps a sankalp of 1 to 365 days, and one missed day does not end it.

Give in charity

In tradition, the merit of a gift given on Akshaya Tritiya does not diminish. Food to the hungry, books to a student, support to a craftsperson, money to a cause.

Begin a venture

Because the day needs no separate muhurat, many families time a griha pravesh (moving into a new home), a shop opening or a new partnership to it, and begin the yantra the same morning. For a new home there is also the Bhuvaneshwari Yantra Card: Maa Bhuvaneshwari is the sovereign of all the worlds. In tradition, her yantra is kept for a settled household, in a new home's puja ghar from its first day.
