About this text

Schools and families sing this aarti on Vasant Panchami and at the Saraswati puja of Navratri. It draws her as tradition does: moon-faced, seated on the lotus, riding the swan, with the veena in one hand and a mala in the other.

One stanza recalls a story from the Ramayana told in some traditions, that Saraswati moved Manthara's mind so that the events leading to Ravana's end could unfold. The refrain returns after each stanza.

Accept, Mother, the incense, lamp, fruit and dried fruit. Give us the eye of knowledge, and carry the world across.
