About this text

North India sings this aarti to Shiva on Mondays, on Pradosh days, through the month of Shravan and on Mahashivratri. Its thought is that Brahma, Vishnu and Sadashiva are one, joined in the syllable Om; hence one, four and five faces, the swan, Garuda and the bull, and the three colours of their robes.

Its length varies from print to print. Maharashtra commonly sings a Marathi aarti to Shiva, Lavthavati Vikrala. The refrain returns after each stanza.

The text

Refrain, sung again after each stanza

Om jay Shiv onkaaraa svaamee jay Shiv onkaaraa
Brahmaa Vishnu sadaashiv arddhaangee dhaaraa

Om, victory to Shiva, to Omkara, O lord, victory. Brahma, Vishnu and Sadashiva, with the half of you that is the goddess.

Stanza 1

Do bhuj chaar chaturbhuj dasabhuj ati sohe
Trigun roop nirakhate tribhuvan jan mohe

Two arms, four arms, ten arms, all very lovely. Beholding the form of the three gunas, the people of the three worlds are enchanted.

Stanza 3

Akshamaalaa vanamaalaa mundamaalaa dhaaree

You wear the rosary, the forest garland and the garland of skulls. Sandal paste and musk grace you, and the moon rests on your brow.

In white, in yellow and in tiger skin on your limbs, with Sanaka and his brothers, Garuda and the others, and the bhutas beside you.

Stanza 5

Kar ke madhya kamandalu chakra trishooladhaaree
Sukhakaaree dukhahaaree jagapaalan kaaree

In your hands are the kamandalu, the discus and the trident. You give joy, take away sorrow and keep the world.

Stanza 6

Brahmaa Vishnu sadaashiv jaanat avivekaa
Pranavaakshar men shobhit ye teenon ekaa

The unwise take Brahma, Vishnu and Sadashiva to be separate. Shining in the syllable Om, these three are one.

Vishwanath sits enthroned at Kashi, with Nandi the celibate. Each day people rise and have his darshan, and great is his glory.

Stanza 11

Trigunasvaamee jee kee aartee jo koee nar gaave
Kahat shivaanand svaamee manavaanchhit phal paave

Whoever sings this aarti of the lord of the three gunas, says Shivanand Swami, gains the fruit the heart desires: so the verse states.

Where readings differ

Copies differ in length and in the closing words: some read that the singer gains the wished-for fruit, others joy and wealth. This page keeps the longer form, as many homes sing it.
