About this text

Tradition says Ravana sang this hymn when he tried to lift Mount Kailasa and Shiva pressed it down with a toe. It is known for its rolling sound, with long compounds in a galloping metre, and for its picture of Shiva dancing the tandava, with the Ganga in his hair, the serpent on his neck and the fire on his brow.

Devotees recite it on Mondays, on Pradosh evenings and on Mahashivratri. Editions number the verses a little differently, and some leave out two of them. Verse 12 also has a known variant, which ends "bhaje" for "bhajaamyaham".
