About this text

This is the first shloka many children learn. It is said before beginning a puja, a reading or a new piece of work, because Ganesha is honoured first in Hindu practice as the remover of obstacles. Popular collections cite various Puranas for it, but no source is settled.

Vakratunda means the one with the curved trunk, and mahakaya the one with the great body.

O curved-trunked one of great body, with the splendour of ten million suns: lord, make all my works free of obstacles, always.
