About this text
The name means the head of the Atharvaveda. Tradition counts it among the Upanishads, and its closing names Atharvana; scholars date it to the 16th or 17th century. It holds that Ganesha is Brahman itself, the whole world coming from him and returning to him, and it gives the mantra Om Gam Ganapataye Namah and the Ganesha Gayatri.
It is recited across Maharashtra, above all in the ten days of Ganeshotsav, often in groups, and it is carved on the wall of the Ranjangaon temple.

Om. May we hear what is good with our ears, O devas, and see what is good with our eyes, O worshipful ones. With firm limbs and bodies, praising you, may we live out the life the devas gave. May Indra of great fame, Pushan the all-knowing, Tarkshya of unharmed wheels and Brihaspati give us well-being. May that protect me, protect the speaker. Om peace, peace, peace.

First say the first letter of gana, then the first vowel, then the anusvara with the half-moon, brightened by Om: this is the form of your mantra. G is its first part, A its middle, the anusvara its last, the bindu beyond it, and the sound joins them; their reciting together is the union. This is the science of Ganesha. Its seer is Ganaka, its metre nichrid gayatri, its deity Ganapati. Om Gam, salutation to Ganapati.

One-tusked and four-handed, holding noose and goad, bearing a tusk and the gesture of blessing, with a mouse on his banner, red, big-bellied, with winnowing-fan ears, in red robes, smeared with red paste, worshipped with red flowers; kind to devotees, cause of the world, undying, who appeared at the start of creation, beyond Prakriti and Purusha. Who meditates on him daily is the best of yogis, the verse says.

Salutation to the lord of the vratas, the lord of the ganas, the lord of the pramathas. Salutation to you, big-bellied, one-tusked, destroyer of obstacles, son of Shiva, form of the giver of boons: salutations.

The section says: who studies this Atharvashirsha becomes fit to be Brahman, thrives everywhere, is not hindered by obstacles and is freed from the five great sins. Reciting in the evening destroys the day's sin, in the morning the night's sin, at both he is sinless, and everywhere he is free of obstacles, and he attains dharma, wealth, desire and liberation. It should not be given to one who is not a student; whoever gives it so becomes more sinful. By a thousand recitations, whatever is sought is achieved with it.
Section 12

The section says: whoever bathes Ganapati with this becomes eloquent. Whoever chants it fasting on Chaturthi becomes learned and famous. So says the word of Atharvana. Who knows the Brahma-enclosure never fears.

The section says: who worships with shoots of durva is like Kubera; with parched rice, becomes famous and wise; with a thousand modaks gains the fruit he wishes; with sticks and ghee gains all, gains all.

The section says: who has eight brahmanas properly take it up becomes bright as the sun. Who chants it during a solar eclipse, on a great river or near a murti gains the mantra's power, and is freed from great obstacles, great faults and great sins. He knows all, he knows all, who knows thus: so says the Upanishad.
