About this text

Shardha Ram Phillauri, a Punjabi scholar and writer, wrote this aarti about 1870. It spread so widely that many homes in North India now end almost any puja with it, whichever deity the puja is for. Its direct address earned it that place: you are mother and father, you are my lord, all I have is yours.

The refrain returns after each stanza. Maharashtra's Vitthal aarti is Yuge Atthavis, a different song.

The text

Refrain, sung again after each stanza

Om jay jagadeesh hare svaamee jay jagadeesh hare
Bhakt janon ke sankat daas janon ke sankat
Kshan men door kare

Om, victory to you, Lord of the world, Hari; O master, victory. You take away the troubles of your devotees and servants in a moment.

Stanza 1

Jo dhyaave phal paave duhkh binase man kaa
Svaamee duhkh binase man kaa
Sukh sampatti ghar aave kasht mite tan kaa

Whoever meditates gains the fruit, the verse says: the mind's sorrow perishes, joy and wealth come to the home, and the body's pain ends.

Stanza 2

Maat pitaa tum mere sharan gahoon main kisakee
Svaamee sharan gahoon main kisakee
Tum bin aur na doojaa aas karoon main jisakee

You are my mother and father; whose shelter could I seek? Without you there is no other in whom I could place my hope.

Stanza 3

Tum pooran paramaatmaa tum antaryaamee
Svaamee tum antaryaamee
Paarabrahm parameshvar tum sab ke svaamee

You are the complete Supreme Self, you are the inner guide. You are the supreme Brahman, the highest lord, the master of all.

Stanza 4

Tum karunaa ke saagar tum paalanakartaa
Svaamee tum paalanakartaa
Main moorakh khal kaamee main sevak tum svaamee
Kripaa karo bhartaa

You are the ocean of compassion, you are the sustainer. I am foolish, wicked and full of desire; I am your servant and you my master. Be kind, O upholder.

Stanza 5

Tum ho ek agochar sabke praanapati
Svaamee sabke praanapati
Kis vidhi miloon dayaamay tumako main kumati

You are the one beyond the senses, the lord of all life. How shall I, of poor understanding, meet you, O merciful one?

Stanza 6

Deenabandhu dukhahartaa thaakur tum mere
Svaamee rakshak tum mere
Apne haath uthaao apne sharan lagaao
Dvaar paraa tere

Friend of the humble, remover of sorrow, you are my lord and my protector. Raise your hand, take me into your shelter; I lie at your door.

Stanza 7

Vishay vikaar mitaao paap haro devaa
Svaamee paap haro devaa
Shraddhaa bhakti barhaao santan kee sevaa

Take away the mind's cravings and faults, remove sin, O god. Increase faith and devotion, and the serving of saints.

Stanza 8

Tan man dhan sab kuchh hai teraa
Svaamee sab kuchh hai teraa
Teraa tujhako arpan kyaa laage meraa

Body, mind and wealth, all of it is yours. I offer you what is yours: what does it cost me?

Where readings differ

Copies differ in a few words. One line reads "khal kaamee", wicked and full of desires, in some copies and "phal kaamee", seeking rewards, in others. This page keeps the first.
